TYPE OF RICE

Rice varieties across the globe are diverse, but they generally fall into three main categories.

Long Grain Rice

Long-grain rice features a slender kernel, approximately four to five times longer than its width, with a typical length ranging from 6 to 9 millimeters. It cooks light and stays separate, offering a fluffy texture.

Medium Grain Rice

Medium-grain rice has kernels that are approximately three times longer than their width, typically ranging from 6 to 4 millimetres in length. When cooked, these grains tend to be slightly sticky, making them ideal for dishes where a clumpy texture is desired.

Short Grain Rice

Short-grain rice has a plump, round kernel with a high starch content, resulting in a soft and sticky texture when cooked. It is perfect for dishes that require a creamy or clingy consistency.

Form of Rice

Rice is available in various forms, but it is not edible in its raw, unprocessed state. It must undergo milling and processing to achieve the desired form for consumption.

Brown

Commonly known as milled or Brown rice, this variety has its inedible outer hull removed. Brown rice gets its color and texture from the bran layer that remains intact on it post hulling process.

Raw

Commonly known as white rice, it is the most common form of rice. It has the outer husk removed which alters its color and texture, while increasing its storage life.

Steam

Steamed rice is a unique variety produced by soaking the grains in water and then subjecting them to hot steam. This process helps retain nutrients and results in a firmer, fluffier texture.

Parboiled

Parboiled rice is the rice that has been partially boiled in the husk to increase the nutritional value of the grain. Parboiled rice is a better source of fiber, calcium, potassium and vitamin B-6 than regular white rice. It also helps in reducing the cooking time.
